A Rare Sun Event in the UK

On Wednesday evening, people in the United Kingdom will see a big sun event. This event is called a solar eclipse. During a solar eclipse, the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun. The Moon blocks the bright light of the Sun.

This will be the biggest eclipse in the UK since the year 1999. In some places, the Moon will hide almost all of the Sun. People in places like Devon and Wales will see the Moon cover up to 96 percent of the Sun. The main time to watch is around seven o'clock in the evening. The UK will not see another big eclipse like this for fifty years.

Other countries like Spain will see a total solar eclipse. In a total eclipse, the Moon covers the Sun completely for a short time. The sky becomes dark like night. In the UK, people will only see a part of the eclipse.

It is dangerous to look at the Sun directly. Looking at the Sun can hurt your eyes forever. Normal sunglasses cannot protect your eyes. You must wear special eclipse glasses to stay safe. You can also make a simple paper hole tool to look at the shadow. What do you think is the most interesting thing about watching the Moon cover the Sun?
